Risk to Resilience: Safety Enhancements in Nuclear Reactors with AI

India’s three‐stage nuclear program hinges on fast breeder reactors, which unlock vast energy potential but face challenges in fuel cycle management and reactor safety. To bolster safety, AI is being deployed across multiple fronts: early detection of hydrogen explosions during used‐sodium disposal sprays, where models spot dangerous gas buildup; real‐time sensor analytics to recognize sodium leak aerosols before they escalate; predictive maintenance algorithms that forecast component lifetimes and flag anomalies ahead of shutdown thresholds; and computer‐vision systems that ensure operators don mandated safety gear, instantly alerting on any violations. Looking ahead, we plan to integrate generative AI to further advance these safety applications with adaptive scenario simulation and intelligent anomaly response.
